Valentine´s Day, 14.02.2026

How Valentine’s Day Evolved from Religious Origins into a Celebration of Love

Over the centuries, a once religious day of remembrance has transformed into a globally celebrated day of love. Valentine’s Day traces its origins back to Saint Valentine. Poets and writers gradually began to romanticize the 14th of February, shaping its meaning over time. Geoffrey Chaucer, for instance, portrayed Valentine’s Day in one of his poems as a day for choosing a partner, leaving a lasting mark on the tradition.

From Handwritten Love Letters…

As time passed, numerous customs emerged that continue to define Valentine’s Day today. One of the most well-known traditions is the giving of flowers—red roses, in particular, have become a powerful symbol of love. In earlier times, handwritten love letters were a cherished way of expressing affection. Today, personalized gifts and shared experiences such as traveling together, romantic dinners, or cooking classes are growing in popularity, as they create meaningful moments to be enjoyed together.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many different ways across cultures. In Japan, for example, women give chocolate to men on February 14, while men return the gesture with gifts on “White Day” in March. In South Korea, there are even monthly days dedicated to love, including “Black Day” for singles. Europe also offers a variety of traditions, such as Denmark’s playful riddle letters or St. Dwynwen’s Day in Wales.

Despite these differences, all these customs share one common theme:

They highlight that love, partnership, and affection are universal values that play an important role in every culture.

“There is nothing happier than finding the person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.”
